Book Review: Those Pricey Thakur Girls – Anuja Chauhan

After reading her first book, The Zoya Factor, I fell in love with Anuja Chauhan’s style of writing and her heroine who is just another girl like you or me. Then came the Battle for Bittora which was equally entertaining. So obviously, when I saw her latest offering at the bookstore, I immediately bought it. The title is so catchy too….”Those Pricy Thakur Girls”!

The book is based in the 80s when the only entertainment available to us Indians on TV was Doordarshan (and then later DD Metro), so when Chauhan describes the sad, depressing tune and the DD logo, it immediately strikes a chord with us…at least with those of us who have grown up during that zamaana.

Anuja Chauhan doesn’t write in English though…she writes in Hinglish, the daily language that we normally speak in, English peppered with Hindi and that makes reading her books all the more fun. It’s like the events are happening with you or your friends. The writing is quite fast paced and witty so you don’t feel like the book is dragging anywhere, you’re just keen to turn the page and find it what happens next.

The characters are also so real!!! Who among us can’t identify with a mother who rants about “getting buried without having a chance to play with her grand children” coz her son (or daughter) isn’t in a hurry to get married. Or the parents panicking about finding good “rishtas” for the daughters, the way sisters can be annoying and yet be our best friends. Or retired friends/relatives playing kot-piece (my nani used to play every afternoon with mom and my two mamis) or sleeping on the terrace during the hot summer months (though I’m from Bombay, I did experience that during my holidays when I went to Gujarat).

Well, needless to say, I really liked this book. I dont want to really write more coz you have the synopsis and i dont want to give out the story. All i will say is that it is a total fun, light rom-com so if that’s your kinda thing, pick it up for a relaxing weekend read sitting by the window/balcony sipping on thanda nimbu-pani 🙂
