Malaysia – My Summer Vacation Destination

Hello Shringaristas,

The last fortnight has been so crazy with almost everyone in my family falling ill (maid included) that I had barely any time to blog. Or shop. Or plan my summer vacation!!! Usually by this time of the year, I am pretty decided with where I want to go for the summer vacation and I have one domestic and one international options ready, with the tentative itinerary, hotels, flight schedules etc. Yes, I love planning holidays and hate going in a tour. It’s mid-March already and I haven’t even narrowed down to my two options! Shocking, really. Anyway, since we embarked on the journey of parenthood, all our holidays have been planned keeping the kids in mind. Hence, one of the options I’m thinking about this year, is MALAYSIA….

If Malaysia conjures up images of pristine beaches, rain forests and the Petronas towers and you find yourself wondering what else it has to offer the kids, then read on. Here are the five main things that I’m sure my boys (and hubby and I) will enjoy….

1) KUALA LUMPUR, BERJAYA TIMES SQUARE AND SUNWAY LAGOON

Petronas Towers, the world’s tallest twin towers connected by a glass and steel skybridge is fascinating to the two boys who love to make tall towers and buildings with their playing blocks and Legos.

Cosmo’s World – Malaysia’s Largest Indoor Theme Park

The Berjaya Times Square, a monorail ride away has Malaysia’s largest indoor theme park with bumper cars, pendulum swings, inverting roller-coaster etc. Everything to keep hyperactive 8 and almost 4 year old brats busy.

Sunway Lagoon Malaysia

Just look at that!!! It’s an aerial view of the Sunway Lagoon. Need I say more???

2) GENTING HIGHLANDS / ELEPHANT ORPHANAGE / ORAGUTAN SANCTUARY

Yes, I know that the Genting Outdoor Theme Park is closed till 2016 because the world’s first Twentieth Century Fox Theme Park is coming up there. But there’s still the Indoor Theme Park, Snow World, Sky Venture, Genting Bowl, Vision City…..yes, I too am a kid at heart. Oh, and there are casinos too 😉
On second thoughts, I would like to take the kids to the Elephant Orphanage or perhaps the Oragutan Sacntuary rather than more theme parks since I would also be doing Legoland. Hmmm. I guess I would let the kids decide.

3) TAMAN NEGARA

After theme parks and man-made lagoons, it’s time to take the kids closer to mother Nature. Taman Negara is the world’s oldest rainforest and was also the location for the reality television show “Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao”. Besides the vast variety of flora and fauna that the oldest rainforest would undoubtedly be home to, it also has the world’s longest canopy walkway.

4) LANGKAWI MARINE PARK

Snorkelling, glass-bottom boat, underwater chamber viewing, scuba diving or just plain frolicking in the crystal clear waters, you can do it all at Langkawi. We can all relax, play in the white sand, splash around in the azure waters and hey, even meet NEMO!

5) LEGOLAND

While planning our holiday itinerary, my strategy usually, is to keep one thing that the kids are most excited about, at the fag end of the trip. I had kept Paris Disneyland right at the end of the trip but couldn’t do that with the Hong Kong one so kept Ocean Park last in Hong Kong. The idea is to keep the trip exciting for the kids till the very end so that each day they know that they still have something to look forward to. The reason why I started doing this is coz at the time of the Paris trip, elder son (who was just 3 then) kept saying “After Eiffel tower and Disneyland, we come back home”. I didn’t want tantrums of “I wanna go back home” there so I kept Disneyland last. Anyway, that’s how it works for me, may not work for everyone.
And that’s the reason why, if I’m holidaying in Malaysia, I would keep Legoland last. Both the boys love Lego and can spend hours playing with it so to go to a Lego theme park would be a great experience. And there is also a Miniland in here with mini replicas of Asia’s popular landmarks made with, what else, Lego.
So, those are the top five things that I would want to experience on a kid-friendly holiday in Malaysia. After all, aren’t we all, sometimes, kids at heart?
