Wei Golden Root Purifying Mud Mask – Review

Last month, I was checking out BeautyBay.com trying to decide which exfoliating toner (acid toner) I should buy when I saw the WEI Golden Root Purifying Mud Mask. It’s packaging looked so appealing, with little pods and brush, and so different from most other masks that I immediately bought it without bothering to check it’s reviews online and couldn’t wait for it to reach me so that I could put it on my face. Read on to know how it fared on me….

Wei Golden Root Purifying Mud Mask
Wei Golden Root Purifying Mud Mask

Wei Golden Root Purifying Mud Mask removes dead skin cells and improves the texture of the skin. Perfect for all skin types, this luxurious face mask has a velvety smooth texture and is infused with Golden Root extract.
The exceptionally powerful antioxidant helps to counteract oxidative damage while pure China Clay lifts dead skin cells. It also helps to purge impurities from the pores so channels are opened and Chi can flow freely.
Perfect as a pick-me-up treatment for the skin, Golden Root Purifying Mud Mask minimises the appearance of pores and balances skin leaving it looking and feeling smooth with a beautifully refined texture.

Packaging

The Wei Golden Root Mud Mask comes in a book-like packaging which opens to reveal 8 pods of mud mask as well as an application brush. Each pod contains 8ml of the mask and while it’s supposed to be individual applications, I really feel it is quite difficult to use up one pod in a single application. The brush included here is sooooo very soft! I simply love applying the mask with it and use it for other masks too.
Since I couldn’t use up all the contents of the pod in one application, I simply stuck the lid back using scotch tape and the product stayed intact without drying up. And no, I didn’t store it in the fridge.

Texture

Doesn’t it look exactly like Nutella? The texture is actually slightly thinner than Nutella, it’s more like Hershey’s Chocolate syrup and is very easy to spread on the face. There’s nothing chocolaty about the fragrance of this mask though. It smells heavenly, like a rich, luxurious skincare product should. I wish there was some way we could share the fragrance online but unfortunately, technology hasn’t come up with that yet.

My Experience With It

Wei Golden Root Mud Mask texture
The first time I used this, I applied a thin layer of the mask on my face. As always, when trying out new skincare products, I always try out a small quantity first to see how my skin reacts to it. The Wei Golden Root Mud Mask felt cool on my skin and also tingled a little. The texture is so smooth and the brush so soft that you feel like you want to continue “painting” your face.  The tingling subsided after some time. Since it is a mud mask, it began to feel slightly tight as it dried and I washed it off after 10 minutes. My skin felt smoooooooth and so much cleaner and the pores almost invisible. I loved how my skin felt after washing it off.
And then, I did something stupid. In my over-enthusiasm to thoroughly clean my skin, I used the mask three times in one week! And to add to it, I was using the acid toner twice a day. And a new clay and essential oil based cleanser once a day! And my poor skin revolted. It became angry and red and blotchy with tiny red bumps and there were more blackheads on my face than I had ever had before. I guess the skin was compensating with the over-zealous cleanup by producing more oil that clogged the pores. Or perhaps it was just throwing up all the dirt and grime it had hidden away in its depths. Or perhaps it just couldn’t handle the assault.
Whatever it is, I finally listened to hubby (he keeps telling me to use less “stuff” on my face) and decided to go slow and give my skin some pampering TLC (tender, loving care). So I stopped the clay+essential oil cleanser, cut down on the acid toner (shall review it soon) to night time only (morning I went back to my Clarins Iris toner) and used the mask just once a week. My skin is much, much better now, though still not back to normal but I learnt my lesson. Too much of a good thing is bad and these are good, but very potent things. Hope you learn from my experience and don’t go crazy with new skincare.

Price

The Wei Golden Root Mud Mask is priced at 28GBP on beautybay.com which is approximately Rs. 2780. Beautybay shows you the prices in Indian rupees so you don’t need to convert. I also had to pay Rs. 650 customs duty for this mask and the acid toner.
It is an expensive mask but it is totally luxurious. I love the way it feels on the skin and how my skin looks and feels after it is washed off. Plus I get 3-4 uses per pod so I feel it is really good value for money.
Overall, I love it, shall continue to use it sensibly and will definitely repurchase once it runs out.

Did your scan go back to normal? Because I use the Goldenroot mask only once and immediately after I took it off after 10 minutes I noticed red blotchy spots on my four head especially.

    1. The redness did subside Sarah. And I also stopped using the Acid toner so this mask has worked wonderfully for me since.

  2. whoa, that’s a lot of products for the skin alright. I can definitely learn from your lesson as I do experiment a lot too. this product looks really good otherwise 🙂
