Maybelline Colossal Kajal Review and Swatch

Q) Which eye pencil is jet black, smudge free, fade free, lasts 12 hours, needs to be sharpened, has been my favourite since a couple of years and costs Rs. 1750?

A) The Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay In Place Eye Pencil in Onyx (read about it here).

Q) Which eye pencil is jet black, smudge free, fade free, lasts 12 hours, DOES NOT need to be sharpened, is my new favourite and costs Rs. 175? (No, I havent forgotten to add the zero.)

A) The new Maybelline Colossal Kajal that costs just one-tenth of what my Estee eye pencil costs!

Packaged in a slim, bright yellow twist-up pencil, this kajal address my prime grouse with eye pencils that need sharpening, product wastage. And when that product has cost you close to two grand rupees, you wouldnt want even a bit of it to go waste. Twist-up pencil = no sharpening = no product wastage 😀
Maybelline claims that Colossal Kajal is smudge-proof and it almost lives up to it’s claims. Once you apply it, if you do not rub your eyes, then it does not smudge or fade from morning to night. If, however, you run your eyes or you cry and wipe your eyes with a tissue, then it’s hello raccoon eyes! In the five days that I’ve been wearing this, it happened with me once when I was chopping onions, a task that ALWAYS makes my eyes sting and water and that was when this kajal smudged.
The Colossal Kajal does not claim to be waterproof, but on me, it was quite water resistant. Except for that occasion with the onions and tears and me rubbing my eyes, I’ve noticed that it doesn’t smudge or fade with just plain water. Infact, I even tried to wash it off from my eyes with just a face wash and water, and it didnt come out completely. It has to be removed with a proper cleanser.
I first swatched these at 3pm and you can see how well it lasted right upto the next morning. It stayed put through my night-time shower and both boys’ baths the net morning. Of course, it came into contact with  shower gel and water, but I didnt go rub-a-dub-dub on it. Quite an impressive performance wouldnt you say?
This is how it looks on my eyes. I have applied it to my bare eyes, no concealer, no primer, so please excuse the dark circles. The line is a bit uneven too coz I was in a rush to go and pick up my younger son from his school.
Once I apply this, I really dont have to worry about it smudging or making my dark circles worse. It ACTUALLY does last the entire day!!! And once, when I went for a late night movie, the kajal applied in the morning was intact till I came back at 1.30am! Obviously, this makes it my new favourite eye pencil.
I’m so glad that a drugstore brand has come out with a product that can compare with a high end one at one-tenth the price! I wish they would come out with more colours in this, like purple or an emerald green with this same long-lasting formulation.
Have you tried this yet? If not, you should, it really IS very good!

Kajal looks so good on you! I’ve tried every blasted kajal and kohl including this one and end up looking like I’ve come off worst in a fist-fight. Shadow liners and liquid liners work but only on the upper lash line. Some people are born uggerly….

Oh cummon, I refuse to believe that. No Indian looks bad with kajal. Maybe you should try just a thin line close to the lower lashes and not actually on the water line.
I actually look half asleep without it….the days I dont wear it, you would think im ill :p
