Gillette Venus “Use Your AND” Campaign and Product Review

Gillette Venus – the world leader in female shave products – recently launched the “Use Your AND” campaign to inspire women to stand up against one-dimensional labels and encourage them to unleash their innate potential. After all, all girls and women have, at some point or other, faced labels and stereotyping. What people forget, is that “The whole is more than the sum of it’s parts!”
As part of the campaign, Gillette Venus released the “AND Stand” video to inspire women to use their ANDs – all of the qualities, attributes and characteristics that make a woman who she is. The video features real women telling personal stories of lost potential stemming from labels, set against a re-mastered recording of the iconic ‘She’s Got It’ song. Here is the video….

I’m so glad that Gillette launched this campaign because, since childhood, we girls are used to being labelled. I was “studious”, “a bookworm”, “thin” etc, and I always felt like saying “That’s not all I am. There is more to me than that”. Later in life, more stereotypes were to follow, “working woman”, “wife”, “undomestic”, followed by “mother” “housewife” (when I quit working to be with my baby) and though those labels were a part of my personality, they weren’t all there was to me.

Yes, I am a housewife, I am a mom AND a teacher AND a beauty blogger AND a party organiser…..there is so much more to me than just these labels! And this holds true for all girls and all women. I’m so glad that Gillette Venus thought of this campaign.

Talking of Gillette, whether you regularly wax or prefer other hair removal methods, there will always be an occasion that sees you reaching out for a razor. Perhaps you have a party and want to wear a particular dress but you’re just halfway through your wax cycle, you just grab the  razor, don’t you? And razor for women and Gillette Venus are almost  synonymous since years! Even before the Gillette Venus was officially launched in India, it was available at the stores selling imported goods (and priced at a premium too!).

The Gillette Venus has a very ergonomically designed, contoured body. The handle with the grooved rubber base makes it easy to grip and ensures that it doesn’t slip out of the hands. The dark blue plastic that you see just below the blade is where your finger rests comfortably while shaving. The blade has a “pivoting, rounded head” to prevent too much pressure and thus, nicks and cuts.

The blade head of the Venus is oval with three blades stacked in the center. There are soft protective cushions above and below the blades to smooth out the skin and give a closer shave. Just below the upper cushion is a blue indicator strip which fades to let you know that it’s time to replace the blades.
The Venus definitely does give a really close shave without nicks and cuts, even managing to shave away the ingrown hair! No matter how much I exfoliate and moisturise, waxing always gives me ingrowths but shaving with the Venus does get rid of them. Temporarily. The come back after the next wax and honestly, I don’t know what to do about them since they just keep recurring!

The best part about Gillette Venus is that the blade is replaceable (the blade cartridges come in packs of four) so once the blue indicator strip fades, you don’t need to throw away the entire razor. I definitely prefer the Venus to the Gillette Satin Care disposable razor which I have used during travel and which comes nowhere close to the Venus.
There are quite a few myths regarding shaving that people have. Women think that the hair will grow back thicker (shaving can’t change the thickness of the hair), the skin will get get pigmented (how will the razor cause pigmentation of the skin?) etc and hence, Gillette has a Facebook app that addresses all the queries and myths that women might have. You can read all those here:
The Gillette Venus is priced at ₹199 while the pack of 4 cartridges is priced at ₹449. I would surely recommend buying the razor and cartridges to the Satin Care disposable one since there is a big difference in performance.
Did you like the “Use Your And” video? I really loved it, especially the “No ifs or buts, just and” part. Do let me know your thoughts on the video as well as the razor.
