The festive season is here and with that, the licence to dress up in our ethnic best. From sarees to salwar suits, most of us have wardrobes overflowing with ethnic wear but at times, that does tend to look a bit blah. If you want to stand apart from the crowd, you have to add a unique, modern twist to your ethnic style. Read on for some quick tips on what to pair your kurtas and saris with to give your ethnic ensemble a modern update.
Long Jacket Over Anarkali
One of the major trends at fashion shows this year was the layering of a jacket over a floor-length anarkali. While it looks very royal and opulent, it also gives a lot of scope for experimentation. You can play around with different fabrics for both the anarkali as as well as the jacket. The fabrics you choose can change the whole look and create contrasts as well. For a unique look, you could try layering a sheer jacket over a heavy, silk Anarkali. Alternately, leave the anarkali fuss and embellishment-free and go all-out opulent with the jacket.
Long Kurta With Skirt
Another beautiful and very fluid trend is to wear a knee-length kurta over a long, voluminous skirt. This too, looks very regal and gives a lot of scope for experimentation in terms of fabrics, colour combinations and embellishments.
Sari With A Shirt Blouse
Ditch the same old sari blouse this year and opt for a shirt instead. Several designers (and their muses) have been patronising this trend since last year and it gives a modern look to the good ol’ six yards. Whether embroidered or plain or even printed, this is also a good trend to keep warm in the colder months.
Long Jacket With Palazzos
An Indian version of the pant suit (well, kind of), this is a very comfortable style. You can amp up the glam quotient by blinging up the jacket and / or palazzo for formal wear or keep it simple and fuss-free for day-wear or casual get-togethers.
Cape over Saree
Ever since Sonam Kapoor paired a cape over her Anamika Khanna saree at Cannes, people have been going ga-ga over this trend. A sheer cape would look whimsical and feninine while a sequined one would spell glamour. Choose your cape according to the ocassion and the kind of saree you want to wear.
But no matter what you choose to wear, what you wear underneath is equally important as the clothes that you wear. So ensure that you wear a good-fitting seamless bra that won’t be uncomfortable and shapewear (if needed).
