Konjac Sponge Review – White and Black

A naturally moist plant fiber that is porus and that is an extremely soft and gentle exfoliator and that can be used to remove even water-based makeup. Completely natural, vegan, cruelty- and chemical-free. Sounds too good to be true? Well, that is exactly what the Konjac sponge is. I first heard about the Konjac sponge when I read about it on Renu’s blog MyBeautyJunction. I was so intrigued when I read about it that I too, asked for it when I ordered my Glam Guru Box.

Konjac Sponge Review

Black and White Konjac Sponges

What Is the Konjac Sponge?

Simple, effective, deep-cleansing and pure. All the Konjac sponges are Eco-friendly, 100% natural and made from pure, edible vegetable roots.
The Konjac Sponge is soft as butter, full of yummy skin friendly goodness. It cleanses the skin like nothing you ever experienced before, leaving the face clean, glowing and silky smooth.

Structure / Texture

Structure and texture of the Konjac sponge
This is not a piece of moon rock though that is what one might assume it to be looking at the texture of the sponge. Konjac is a tuber and this sponge is made entirely from the root of the plant. When dry, the sponge shrinks to half it’s size and becomes rock hard. Once immersed in water for a couple of minutes, it absorbs the water and swells up and becomes extremely soft.
The sponge is semi-circular in shape with one side flat and the other side is domed and both sides can be used on the face.

In the image above, the white sponge looks smaller than the black as it hasn’t been used since a few days and hence has become drier and has shrunk.

Effectiveness

The white sponge is nothing but pure konjac root sponge while the black one has charcoal in it and thus is ideal for acne-prone skin. In my Glam Guru box, I had asked for the black one but they sent me the white by mistake. Glam Guru has really lovely customer care because they sent me the black one immediately without asking for the white to be returned.
I had read in Renu’s review that the usage of this sponge causes breakouts initially so I was prepared for that. However, it is very upsetting when you see 4 huge cystic pimples on the face after being totally pimple-free for more than a month. I was using the white sponge with my Forest Essentials Cleanser twice a day so I cut it down to using it once a day.
Then when the black sponge came, I retired the white one and got out the black one but started using it just once a day. The pimples subsided (though the marks haven’t gone yet) and my skin feels so clean and soft! And best of all, the white heads and black heads are gone!!! I’m a person who never gets clean-ups and facials done because it damages my skin so this gentle way of exfoliating is perfect for me.
Though these sponges can be used without a cleanser to clean the face and even to remove water-based makeup, I haven’t yet used it without a cleanser.

Availability

The Konjac sponge, unfortunately, isn’t easily available in India. However, you can order it online from konjacspongecompany.com or abeautifulworld.co.uk or even from Glam Guru (info@glamguru.co.il). If you have acne-prone skin, then your best bet is the black, charcoal one. Sponges with pink clay (for dry skin) and green clay (for oily skin) are also available as is a different shaped sponge for use on the entire body.
Have you tried this wonderful, vegan, eco-friendly, cruelty-free exfoliating sponge yet?

Apparently the breakouts are due to the period of adjustment for the skin when you dump the harsh cleansers and scrubs and go in for the natural root. Anyway, glad you liked it! My first one just deteriorated (July to Jan ’14) and it was awful – stank, turned green and broke down.

  3. I use those vegetable loofahs too for the body but they are too harsh for the face. These are really so soft!

i m waiting for mine to arrive… i had ordered the french red clay one…. btw these can be picked from feelunique.com as well… with free shipping to india… 🙂

  5. Indeed these looks like moon rocks. sounds very interesting.. Untill now I have heard and used only vegetable loofas which are available with local grocery store.

  6. Perhaps thats a way of purging/detox…its getting rid of all the congestion beneath the skin.

  7. I guess the break outs are because the sponge is bringing all the deep dirt and grime to the surface? A kind of purging maybe?

  8. I googled it and found a seller for these in Chennai but i.dont know how authentic those would be. You can buy from these sites, they deliver to India.

  9. this looks really nice. wonder when it will hit indian shores.
