Whether I wear any makeup or not, the one thing that I simply can’t do without is kohl or kajal. Perhaps it has to do with my Indian genes or the fact that my mom used to apply homemade kajal in my eyes right from childhood so, needless to say, I feel like I look “ill” if I’m not wearing a wee bit of kajal on my lower lash line. Since kohls are such a must-haves for me, I keep buying and trying loads of them in the form of eye pencils but the one I’m talking about today is simply the BESTEST I have ever used. I’m talking about the Sugar Stroke Of Genius Kohl. Read on to know what I love about this eye pencil and what I simply hate!!!
Sugar Stroke Of Genius Kohl Review
About Sugar Stroke Of Genius Kohl
Price ₹499. Available here.
“Eye makeup can be tricky but a stroke of genius can put you at ease. Add to that intense black colour and soft creamy texture and you know you’ve been hooked for life. We’re on about SUGAR Stroke of Genius Heavy-Duty Kohl – a waterproof Kohl pencil that can add pretty to your eyes in a single swipe. Its wax-based formula spreads evenly and lasts for up to 8 hours. Not just that, it comes with a free sharpener to ensure your eye makeup is always on point. The SUGAR Stroke of Genius Heavy-Duty Kohl is currently available in the shade ’01 Back to Black’. It is free of mineral oil, paraffin, preservatives, volatile cyclomethicones (D4, D5, D6) and animal derived ingredients.”
If you follow me on Instagram, you would have seen me proclaim my love for this awesome, amazing kohl! It is truly the softest, creamiest, smoothest, blackest eye pencil / kohl / kajal that I have ever tried and it lasts all day and well into the night too! The Stroke of Genius Kohl glides onto the eyes without any tugging or pulling and sets within a few seconds. Once it sets, it simply doesn’t budge – especially from the upper lash line – till you remove it with a proper makeup cleanser.
On the lower lash line and waterline though, it can smudge a bit but only if you rub your eyes a lot. It doesn’t irritate or sting the eyes either even when worn on the waterline. The pigmentation is incredible and just one stroke is enough to give a matte, jet black line. What’s not to love?
But while I absolutely love the texture, pigmentation and longevity of the Stroke Of Genius Kohl, I hate truly dislike the packaging – the pencil that needs to be sharpened leading to product wastage. Not only product wastage, even if you sharpen this pencil with the special sharpener it comes with, you don’t get the sharp point that you need for precise, thin application. And since the wax-based kohl is so creamy and soft, it keeps breaking and getting stuck to the blade of the sharpener. Yes, the sharpener comes with a cleaning stick to remove the product residue from the blade but that doesn’t solve the issue of the blunt tip! If only the Stroke Of Genius Kohl came in a retractable form…..

And here’s a picture of me wearing the Sugar Stroke Of Genius Kohl…
In this picture, I’m wearing the Sugar Stroke of Genius Kohl on my upper lid and the Twist and Shout Fadeproof Kajal in Still Got the Blues on my lower lash line and waterline. You can see what a perfect, deep, matte black finish it gives. It is a fab product but in a not very ideal packaging.
My Views
Yes, I know I am repeating myself when I say that the Sugar Stroke of Genius Kohl is the softest, smoothest, creamiest, blackest kohl I have ever used and I love the longevity too! And the fact that it doesn’t sting when I apply it on my waterline. So if you are looking for a deep black kajal / kohl, then look no further. I highly, highly recommend this one for the texture, pigmentation and longevity. The packaging, however, is a disappointment because trying to sharpen such a soft kohl leads to loads of product wastage. I do hope the folks at Sugar cosmetics read this review and update the packaging to a retractable one. I also hope they launch more shades such as an emerald green, plumy purple and indigo blue in this range – it would be great to have such gorgeous colours with this creamy texture.
Have you tried the Sugar Stroke of Genius Kohl? What’s your take on it? I haven’t tried any of the Sugar lipsticks as yet but seeing the quality of the kohl, I feel like I should try those out too. What shades would you recommend in those lipsticks? Do let me know in the comments below.
Have a great day Dollie and readers 🙂
