DIY Hair Oil For Thick, Lustrous Hair

Indians have always been genetically blessed with awesome hair, and have also taken great care of their manes. I am one of those. I was born with a full head of jet black hair which were in pins by the time I was just 3 months old! And my mom always made sure that she gave my hair oil massages at least thrice a week, as a result of which I had waist length, thick, lush black hair. (The pic above is not of me though I really wish it was!)

Once I became a mother myself, I simply didn’t have the time nor the energy to oil my hair and that took a toll on my hair. So, I decided to go back to my roots (pun intended).

I took equal quantities of the following oils:

Coconut oil: It is known to prevent protein loss from hair and protect against cuticle damage. You can use any brand that you like. I used the plain old Parachute.

Castor oil: Castor oil actually penetrates into the skin due to its low molecular mass and has antibacterial and conditioning properties. It is widely available at all chemists and I used a non branded one.

Olive oil: This too, is a deep penetrating, hydrating oil which also regenerates skin cells.  There is a plethora of olive oils available in the market. I used Figaro since I only needed it for my hair.

Sweet almond oil: A very emollient oil rich in Omega 6 and Omega 9 fatty acids.  I used Hamdard Roghan Badam Shirin which is pure almond oil.

Vitamin E oil: Get any Vitamin E capsules from the chemist and squeeze out the oil from them. I used Evion 400.

I take approximately equal quantities of all the above oils, except for the Vitamin E. I extract that from 10 vitamin E capsules. Mix all of the them in a bottle and use 2-3 times a week (at least, I try to). Take a little of this oil mixture in a bowl, warm it up and massage scalp and hair. Those who have dandruff or an itchy scalp can also add a couple of pieces of camphor to the oil and let it melt while warming the oil.

The process of massaging the scalp stimulates blood circulation and that in turn helps in relieving stress too. And as an added bonus, the oil on my fingers hydrates my cuticles too! Also, those of you who have scanty eyebrows or eyelashes can also a smudge of this to help hair growth.

Try it out and let me know if it helped you.

  1. Thanks for the recipe of the oil, I found an oil which is similar but has more nutrients and more vitamin E in the oil and is a branded product.. You can google Satthwa hair oil.

    Hi Dollie,
Its really a wonderful post. I was going through your older post and found this. can you please tell whats the ratio of vit E against the other oils

    1. Thanks Remya, glad you liked this post.
I generally take equal quantities of the other oils to fill a 200ml bottle and one entire strip (10 capsules) of Evion 400.
