YSL Vernis À Lèvres Glossy Stain in #12 Corail Fauve- Review And Swatch

I bought this Glossy Stain in January as a birthday gift to myself along with the Estée Lauder Double Wear lipstick in Stay Mauve. It’s almost the end of June now and I still haven’t written about either of them!!! What’s wrong with me??? Anyway, better late than never. So here is the YSL Glossy Stain #12, Corail Fauve.

What YSL claims :

A revolutionary new lip product! Rouge Pur Couture Vernis à Lèvres Glossy Stain combines the texture and shine of a gloss with the long-wear of a stain for a truly innovative lip product. A lightweight texture that immediately melts onto lips. Rouge Pur Couture Vernis à Lèvres Glossy Stain delivers intense glossy colour for an extremely long lasting new kind of shine. The applicator’s unique slanted tip and short soft bristles allow for flawless application with perfect precision

The first thing that strikes you is the unique packaging of this Glossy Stain. While most glosses come in long tubes, the YSL Glossy Stain comes in an opulent black and gold packaging which is the size of a lipstick. The black body has two rectangular “windows” on both sides so that you can see the gloss inside. The golden cap has the YSL logo embossed and enamelled in red. Though the black body is of plastic, it actually looks like stone!

The golden cap also houses a slanted, hexagonal applicator which is really soft. The pointed tip of the applicator is specially good for applying the gloss to the Cupid’s bow.

Texture wise, there’s no gloss I’ve used that has a comparable texture. This one is so light, it’s almost like applying water with an applicator. It goes on quite thin and sheer and feels weightless and you can layer up without feeling like you have too much goop on your lips. There is a mild fragrance to this which is quite pleasant.

The colour is a bright coral pink but for some reason it turns really dark, almost red on my lips. I don’t know if its just me or if this happens with everyone but it looks like nothing like coral pink on my lips. But I must say that this gloss lasts long, real long. It lasts easily for 4-6 hours on my lips even after eating and drinking. The sheen fades a bit but the colour is intact. It might even last longer but 6hours is the max I’ve worn it. And yes, it is a stain so you really need a good makeup remover to get it off.
I’m sorry I haven’t been able to do a lip swatch coz I have a huge nasty pimple just above my lips and I really do not want to take pics with that 🙁 . Once that horrid zit goes away, I’ll do an LOTD with this.
And now for the unpleasant part, the price. It costs Rs. 2200 for 6ml ($34 in USA). Ok, you can breath out now. Yes, it’s very expensive for a gloss but I honestly feel that if you want to splurge, you should get at least one colour in this coz this really is a very unusual gloss/stain.
Have you tried the YSL Glossy Stain? Did the colour turn dark on your lips?

  1. It’s because of the layering. Anyway it looks darker on the lips, then when I apply two / three layers, it gets really dark. Shall explain when I do the lip swatches.
