Interesting facts about Sharad Purnima (or as we Gujjus call it, Sharad Poonam):

* The Full Moon Night of the Hindu month of Aswin is known as the Sharad Purnima / Sharad Poonam / Ras Purnima / Kojagari Purnima.

* It marks the end of the monsoon and ushers in the season of autumn. It is the celebration of the day when the moon gets closest to the Earth.

* It is believed that on this night Goddess Lakshmi visits from place to place asking "Ko jagari??" meaning "Who is awake" and blesses those who are found awake.Hence people keep "jagarans" ie stay awake singing devotional songs or playing garba.

* The Sharad Poornima night is also seen as the night of love and couples come out at night to face the moon and express their love.

* The moon's rays on Sharad Purnima are said to have curative properties and so, many communities make Kheer, leave it in the moonlight and consume it later as prasad.

* It is believed that on this night, Krishna invited all the Gopis of Vrindavan to play the Raas with him. Such was his "leela" that each Gopi felt that Krishna was dancing with her.

Here are some fun facts about Dussehra :
* Dussehra is derived from the Sanskrit words dasha (“ten”) and hara (“defeat”).
* It is celebrated in the month of Ashwin according to the Hindu calender (October / November).

* It is also called Vijay Dashami to mark the victory of Goddess Durga over the Demon King Mahishasura.

* It was on Dussehra that the Pandavas completed their 13 years of exile, retrieved their weapons from the Shami tree and worshipped them.

* In many parts of India, Ramleela is enacted which ends with the effigy of Ravan going up in flames to signify the victory of good over evil.

* The burning of the 10-headed Ravan effigy also symbolises the killing of our vices: kama or lust, krodha or anger, moha or attachment, lobh or greed, mada or pride, swarth or selfishness, matsara or jealousy, ahankara or ego, amanavta or lack of humanity and anyaya or injustice.

* According to legend, since Goddess Durga needed extra powers, all the other Gods and Goddesses transferred their powers to her stood as still as statues as a result. This incident is celebrated as Golu in Tamil Nadu where scenes are recreated using idols and dolls.

* In North India, people sow barley in earthen pots on the first day of Navratri. On Dussehra day, these sprouts are used as symbols of luck.

* Dussehra is also celebrated in Bangladesh, Nepal and Malaysia. It is in fact, a national holiday in Malaysia.

* Emperor Ashoka is said to have converted to Buddhism on Dussehra. Dr. Ambedkar too, converted to Buddhism on this day.

It's been 9 years of blogging ! 9 years since I started "Indian Shringar" (which I later changed to The Bombay Brunette) on a whim without any knowledge of blogging or seo or keywords and with terrible photography skills. 9 years of learning - learning how to shoot better pictures, how to shoot videos and edit them. 9 years of collaborating with some incredible brands and PR agencies. It's truly been a wonderful journey and I thank all of you for your love and support. ❤❤❤
