Za True White Two-Way Foundation SPF 20 PA++ – Review and Swatch

For the longest time, my favourite “powder foundation”- that I used more like a powder than a foundation – was the Shiseido White Lucent Brightening Powder Foundation. When Za came out with a similar two-way foundation, I was really eager to try it out since Za is part of the Shiseido family. The Za team sent me the foundation in a case engraved with my name on it making it special. Read on to know my views on the Za True White Two Way Powder Foundation with SPF 20 PA++

Packaging

The Za True White Two Way foundation comes in a white plastic compact case with a chic metallic cover. Having my name engraved on it makes it truly personalised and better looking than the black Shiseido case. The case also has a nice large mirror which is so handy when applying the powder on the go. I hate compacts that come either without a mirror or have a useless teeny-tiny one.
The foundation and the case are sold separately, making it eco-friendly. Once you hit pan on the foundation, all you need to do is replace it with a new one without throwing away the entire case thus reducing the plastic in our landfills. Each refill also comes with a new sponge.

Texture and Staying Power

The powder is really finely milled and silky to touch. It goes on very smoothly and gives a total matte look. (I was sent the shade 21 which is very light for my skintone though it looks like a perfect match in this picture. That’s because of the yellow light in the cafe where I took the pics while waiting for son’s football class to get over.) I apply a very thin, fine layer since it isn’t my shade and once it settles on the skin, it doesn’t appear that light. In fact, it does make the skin appear brighter, not fairer, but brighter.
The reason why this has been called a Two Way foundation is because it can be used with either a dry sponge or damp. When used with a dry sponge, it gives a light, sheer coverage. With a damp sponge you can increase the coverage. Because this shade is light for me, I wore it with a wet sponge at home only to check out it’s lasting power. For a sheer coverage, I also like using it with my TBS Kabuki Brush for a natural-looking yet air-brushed finish.
When worn dry, it keeps my skin matte and shine free for almost 5 hours. However, it does feel slightly dry on my cheeks and undereye area which are anyway dehydrated. Just like the Shiseido one, this too will be perfect for the hot, humid weather in Mumbai. Applied with a damp sponge, it lasts for nearly 7 hours! If I’m using it with a wet sponge, I dab it on my face with the sponge and then buff it in with the Kabuki brush for a soft, matte look with moderate coverage.

Swatch

As you can see from the swatch, shade number 21 is light for my NC37-40 skintone. There are four shades available in India, 20, 21, 22 and 32 with the last one being a pink-toned one and the other three with yellow undertones. I shall buy shade 22 which will probably be closer to my skintone.

Price

The case for the Za True White Powder Foundation is priced at ₹400 while the refill (which comes with a sponge) is priced at ₹550.

My views

I love the fact that the Za True White Two Way Foundation is a dupe of my favourite Shiseido one. The SPF 20 PA++ is also a welcome feature for the Bombay weather. Though I always apply a sunscreen before stepping out, it’s nice to have an additional protective layer on my skin. And of course, I absolutely adore my personalised case 🙂
