One garment that I absolutely love and that has a permanent place in my wardrobe is the denim shirt. This versatile garment can be styled in several different ways and for that reason, it’s my favourite. Let me show you 5 ways to style a denim shirt….
#1. Denim on Denim
This is one of the most basic ways to wear a denim shirt. Quite a no-brainer actually, it’s great for those busy days when you don’t have time to put together an outfit and are in a rush. The only thing to keep in mind is to ensure that you wear different shades of denim on the top and bottom. A light shirt with dark jeans and a dark shirt with lighter jeans.
These pictures were from one of my winter trips and I have styled my Denim on denim look with colourful scarves and jacket and boots. This also is a great look for work (as long as the jeans are not ripped / distressed) especially when paired with a linen jacket and one that I love for flights as well.
#2. Layered Denim On Denim
This is a slight variant on the first version and is great for hot, summer days. Simply add a tank top under the shirt. You can remove the shirt if it gets too hot and wear it again if you’re in a place where the air cons are going at full speed.
#3. Denim Shirt with a Striped Skirt
While a denim shirt looks great with most kind of skirts, I personally prefer to pair it with a flowy striped skirt since I feel that looks best with my curves. It also looks fabulous with a black pencil skirt but if you are on the leaner side.
Honestly speaking, a denim shirt can be worn with any kind of skirt – even a leopard print one! I have even paired it with a black, embroidered skirt but don’t have a picture in that at the moment. This striped skirt, though, is one of my favourites because it is the perfect length, is flowy and comfortable and just right for the Bombay weather.
#4. Denim Shirt over a Dress
How often have you bought a shift dress and then didn’t wear it because you felt it looked too “plain” and ho-hum? It’s happened with me a couple of times but I made it work by wearing a denim jacket over it. Of course, a denim jacket works if you’re in a cold place but would be torturous in a hot, humid city like Mumbai. Fret not, a denim shirt looks just as nice…
#5. Denim Shirt over a Playsuit / Romper.
I love jumpsuits and playsuits but they aren’t always the most work-appropriate clothes. A denim shirt is a good way to dress up a playsuit / jumpsuit making it a tad bit more formal.
I have also worn this shirt over a black jumpsuit and it looked fabulous – perfect for desk-to-dinner – just remove the shirt, apply a red lipstick and you’re ready for post work drinks and dinner.
So, those were the different ways in which I like to style my denim shirt. Isn’t it a versatile garment? Because my personal style is quite minimalist, I don’t prefer too many accessories, though you could, of course accessorise these looks with fashion jewelry to suit your taste.
